Blue Satellite is the American manufacturer’s first model for wireless listening and accompanies the ever-growing headphone family from them. Blue Microphones are, as the name may reveal, mainly known for their microphones, but we have tested and been impressed partly by their wired mid-model Sadie and not least their incomparable magnetostat handset, Ella for audiophiles who put the money where their mouth is. Satellite is in many ways a classic extension of the Blues concept and at the same time it is released in a time of fierce competition and places itself in a high price range. How well is it doing? Read on and you will get the answer.
Design
Blues’ previous headphone design divides the editorial staff – some love the mammoth, metallic, Formula 1-inspired design of Sadie and Ella. Others loathe it and find it awkward and ugly. However, there is total consensus that Blue Satellite gets a full pot in the design section – if this is not the most stylish over-ear headphone on the market today, then at least one of the top three candidates. A wonderful 40-50s retro radio look mixed with a really increased weight and design. It is a mammoth, stylish, impressive but still more subtle metallic construction, which mixes gilded elements with silver and black or white. Satellite exudes luxury and quality and is really no fool you are ashamed to wear in town. On the contrary, you learn to be the hippest in the village.
Technique
Satellite is, as I said, wireless headphones with ANC (active noise reduction) and with Blues classic, built-in audiophile amplifiers that can be switched on and off. The headphones support aptX, which is good and expected in the price range, and are charged via microUSB, which is still the most common connection even though the superior USB-C is starting to take over more and more.
The battery life is set to 24 hours, but with the amplifier and ANC on, it shrinks to an unimpressive eight hours, which in reality may be even lower, depending on your listening volume. To fully charge them takes just over three hours, something USB-C had done a lot to speed up the process around. If the battery runs out, you can drive the headphones passively through the included 3.5 mm cable, but then the amplifier function as well as the noise reduction disappear.
So sounds Blue Satellite
Then we have come to the main issue in the test: how good does Blue Satellite sound? In short: they sound good, but not great for the price.
Brusreduceringen är riktigt effektiv, samtidigt så förstör eller lägger den inte till något störande bakgrundsljud som vissa enklare lurar gör, även om man hör anti-brusvågen när det är helt tyst i lurarna. Lösningen Blue använder kräver ett extra par element, vilket bidrar till storleken och tyngden på lurarna. Man kan diskutera om detta är den mest effektiva lösningen. Världen runt omkring dig tonas helt ut, vilket är superskönt på ett bullrigt tåg eller flyg, men viktigt att tänka på om du är ute och går nära vägar eller korsar tågspår; där det potentiellt kan bli förödande konsekvenser om man inte har medhörning och är uppmärksam.
Summering och omdöme Blue Satellite
Det står helt klart att Blue Satellite är ett par vansinnigt snygga retro-design-lurar, som känns och ser gedigna ut, har effektiv brusreducering och låter bra överlag, om än inte fantastiskt för priset. För det är just prislappen som blir den stora faktorn här – för runt 2 000 kr hade detta varit en solklar köprekommendation. Nu kostar Blue Satellite hisnande 4 500-5 500 kr i Sverige, vilket dels är seriösa pengar i sig men också sätter dom i en oerhört svår kategori, där vi har lurar som Sennheiser Momentum som låter bättre, Bose QuietComfort II 35 som har mer välbalanserad ANC och Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H9i som är bekvämare – och alla dessa tre är dessutom 1-2 000 kr billigare.
Blue Satellite är helt enkelt för dyra för vad de erbjuder och briljerar inte inom någon kategori på ett sådant vis att de skulle motivera den uppseendeväckande höga prislappen. För 5 000 kr kan du få ett schysst par over-ear- och ett par in-ear-lurar, som båda är riktigt bra. Såvida inte looken är helt avgörande för dig, så finns det flertalet bättre ljudande alternativ inom den stora djungel som är trådlösa hörlurar i mellanprisklassen.
